Exaltation. Chill bumps trilling over your skin. The dizzying excitement of anticipation. For those of us who experience music on this level, a concert isn’t just spending the evening experiencing live music. From the first roll of the drum, the strum of the guitars strings within that initial note, the loudest – or often times softest – note sung out can elicit any of these reactions. Visceral. Life changing. Breathtaking.
For Indianapolis, the impact of live music was proven still prevalent on Friday November 10th, as American rock band Dirty Honey took the stage at-what was once a movie house- The Vogue. With frontman Marc LaBelle taking the stage, it became quickly obvious the power this four piece band envelopes-delivering a powerful beginning with song Can’t Find The Brakes, off of 2023’s release of the same name. Not only the power in how they deliver their music, but their stage presence alone could bring any audience to their feet with a roaring applause. Friday would be no exception as the band rolled through fan favorites such as California Dreamin’ and Heartbreaker as rock and roll fans, a mix of old and young from various walks of life, sang along and cheered for the Los Angeles based band.
Formed in 2017, Can’t Find The Brakes is the bands second full length offering on Dirt Records, housing hard hitting songs such as Dirty Mind and Don’t Put Out The Fire. The bands gritty, traditional rock sound- led by guitarist John Notto’s incendiary riffs and progressions- marries with singer Marc LaBelle’s vocals perfectly to deliver a sound reminiscent of rock giants of the past but fresh and unique enough to keep fans interested and listening excitedly as bassist Justin Smolian holds the rhythm section strong in his grasps with drummer Jaydon Bean rounding the sound out. All the more proof of the bands explosive performance, and sound, could be found toward the end of the show when LaBelle performed Another Last Time atop the venues bar to cheers and applause from the crowd. A rapturous night concluding with Rolling 7s as each band member took turns soloing to celebrate a set well done.
